Srinagar, Apr 14 (KNO): As a part of a move aimed at ensuring the safety and dignity of women in public spaces, Srinagar Police on Monday appealed to women to report any form of harassment, bullying, eve-teasing, or unsolicited comments. The police also publicized dedicated helpline numbers to encourage swift and accessible grievance redressal. As per the details collected by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), a public awareness post shared by the Srinagar Police said they remain committed to protecting women and girls in the city. “Respected Women: If you face harassment, unsolicited comments, bullying, or feel unsafe in public spaces in Srinagar, don’t hesitate to reach out. Srinagar Police is here to help,” the details accessed by KNO revealed, adding the message read, ending with the line: “Stay safe, speak up.” Also, the dedicated helpline numbers shared, to ensure prompt assistance, the following helpline numbers have been made operational are as: Women Helpdesk (WhatsApp): 9596770601, Women Helpdesk (Call): 9596770602, PCR Helpline: 9596222551 and Women Safety Squad: 7006740755. In the meanwhile, as part of their broader strategy to curb crimes against women, Srinagar Police has also set up Women Helpdesks in police stations and deployed a ‘Mobile Women Safety Squad’ to respond to real-time emergencies or distress calls. Also, a police spokesperson shared, women should feel safe and supported, whether they’re commuting, shopping, or working. “We want to create an environment where no woman hesitates to speak up against any misconduct,” they said. Meanwhile, locals also appreciated the move, especially women who often feel vulnerable in crowded public spaces like markets, buses, and streets—particularly after dark. A university student said this is a much-needed step. Harassment is often normalized or ignored. “Having a direct helpline where we can report without fear is reassuring,” she said. “We hope the police also take quick and visible action once a complaint is made,” said another working professional from Srinagar. Similarly, Srinagar Police reiterated its commitment to ensuring that no woman feels isolated or powerless in the face of harassment and urged citizens to work together to build a respectful and secure environment for all—(KNO)
